Discovery of 13th Century Warship: Mysteries Behind the Mongol Attacks on Japan

The Mongols attacked Japan twice in the 13th century in what some historians have called the greatest threat ever faced by this country. Much remains unknown about those invasion forces but why did the Mongols seek to conquer Japan? How did Japan repel the threat? Items salvaged from the wreck of a huge Mongolian warship discovered off the Nagasaki island of Takashima last year provide some clues.
