The beautiful peak of Mt. Rishiri

Exploring the island by bicycle

This edition of "journeys in japan" takes you to Rishiri Island, off Hokkaido. The island was formed by volcanic eruptions. The symmetrical conic shape of the island, which looks like a mountain in the middle of the sea, fascinates visitors. Every year from June to September, when the slopes are not covered with snow, climbers flock to the island and head for the summit of this beautiful mountain.
During his journey to climb to the summit of Mt. Rishiri and to glimpse the life of islanders, journalist John Matthews savors the blessings of the island that is watched over and nurtured by the mountain.

Access from Wakkanai
Depending on the season, 2 to 4 ferry services are operated daily from Wakkanai Port, in the mainland Hokkaido, to Rishiri Island's Oshidomari Port. It takes about 100 minutes.

Climbing Mt. Rishiri
Mt. Rishiri is 1,721m high. But the 1,719m north peak is currently the highest point climbers can reach, because of severe erosion at the summit. The starting point at an altitude of 220m can be accessed by car. The climbing season for Mt. Rishiri begins in June every year, after snow melts. The mountain attracts many climbers until September.
Information on climbing Mt. Rishiri is available on the Rishiri Tourist Association's website.

Traveler: John MATTHEWS
Rishiri may seem like a place very detached from the normal goings-on of Japan, but I feel it reflects a lot of what Japan has always meant to me: an almost dogmatic respect for nature, tight-knit communities, and a gentle but lively spirit that you can actually feel in the air. The nature itself is first-class; watching clouds sweep past my face and over a mountaintop as if it were a time-lapse photo made me feel as if I was frozen in time myself. As for the food, it might have taken a little getting used to but being able to eat uni and konbu literally off the boat was a treat I don't get to experience often. Add a cool sea breeze as you cycle along the coast watching the sunset and you've got something worth taking notice of.
