Japan 7 Days - 2012/02/25 - Better Umbrellas

Feb. 25, Sat. 14:10 - 14:40 (UTC) etc.

Nature and Technology Combine to Make Better Umbrellas

Wet umbrellas are evidence that they've done their job. But they need to be ready to do it again as soon as possible. Lotus leaves inspired a small company in Fukui Prefecture to produce an umbrella that stays dry. Water droplets that fall on the leaves turn into balls and roll off. The texture of the surface repels water.

Developers could see the surface elements with a microscope. Reproducing the effects in an umbrella, however, proved to be difficult. A string of failed experiment led them to superfine polyester. Experienced craftsmen weave the threads to increase density and create a texture similar to that of lotus leaves.

The company made the umbrella to meet the requirements of just one customer. But the product turned out to be so successful that it helped prevent the business from falling into bankruptcy.

I can't re-post files, sorry. The exception is files that are less than a day old. All mediafire links are broken forever. If you ask nicely and show that you tried but couldn't find the file elsewhere, someone may share it again.
