All Japan University student Karatedo Championships
[Focus]
1. What is Karate?
Japan's traditional martial art of karate is said to have spread across the country from the Ryukyu islands, present-day Okinawa. It has various schools today but they are basically divided into those with full contact rules and those where the blows must be stopped just prior to contact. There are many techniques to be learned but the most fundamental is the punch known as the tsuki where the arms are thrust sharply forward from the side as the body turns from the waist. You must keep your upper arms tight against your sides before thrusting your arms forward. Experienced practitioners can easily break a wooden board in this way. There are kicks, too, from the front and side and also on the turn, and many other techniques involving uses of the feet and legs. Each scores points in traditional karate and that scoring element has contributed to karate's global spread as a sport. We explain the basics of karate.
2. The University Where the Women Have Won the All Japan University Karatedo Championships Three Years in a Row
The All Japan University Karatedo Championships are a team event divided into the Kumite competition in which participants fight each other directly and the Kata competition for perfection of karate forms. In Kumite competition, Teikyo University, that was looking to win the contest three years in a row, was the prime focus of attention. The more than 50-strong university karate club has also produced many Japan national team wrestlers.
A women's Kumite bout lasts for two minutes. There are three to a team and the first team to win two bouts advances. Overall team strength and unity are vital and Teikyo was utterly dominant in winning the last three times out. Teikyo was number one, too, in the seamless routines of women's Kata, where the points are scored for such categories as understanding, timing, speed and spirit. Teikyo also won in men's Kata, so the men and women combined won in three of the four divisions, which made Teikyo the top university in Karatedo in Japan this year.
We go in deep to view the beauty of the karate techniques and also the sheer dynamism of the men's Kata, which includes spectacular throws.
