Tokyo Fashion Express - 2012/12/10

Dec. 10, Mon.

NIPPON STYLE:
Young-at-heart fashion veteran
Designer Hiroko Koshino

In our second of three features on outstanding talent at the Tokyo Collection, we focus on 75-year old veteran designer Hiroko Koshino. The eldest of three sisters (all designers), she has been at the front line of fashion for more than 30 years. She also wears another hat-that of a painter. She had originally wanted to study art, but was overruled by her mother. Koshino started painting seriously, mostly abstracts, about ten years ago. To prove her dedication, she opened a gallery in her new Ginza building to showcase her work. Her first exhibition, which ran from September 8th to November 25th, was titled "Through the Eyes of an 18-Year Old." Her painting inspires clothing design and vice versa. We visit her in her Ashiya studio, near Kobe, where she is working on her latest series for the Tokyo Collection. In contrast to her previous decorative style, these designs have a new simplicity influenced by her recent paintings. We follow Hiroko Koshino into new territory.
