Hanamikoji-dori

Hanamikoji-dori is a one-kilometer long street passing north-south through the Gion entertainment district. Geiko and maiko go about their business on this glamorous street, lined with entertainment establishments.
In contrast, a silence resonates deep within this dynamic atmosphere. The two faces of Kyoto - poised and resplendent - are concentrated, here, on Hanamikoji-dori.

Master of Tea
Channell arrived in Japan from Canada in 1984 to study Japanese martial arts and has lived in Kyoto for about 20 years.
He began studying the Urasenki way of tea to learn the spirit of both the literary and martial arts. Channell was bestowed the tea name, Soei. His busy schedule includes teaching tea and owning a café on Sanjo-dori.

Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Theater
This venue for the Miyako-odori performances is an old temple renovated in 1873. The themes used in the shows held each April are based on old stories.

Gion Tokuya displays the maiko practice schedule at their entrance. The most popular items on the menu are warabi-mochi, a sweet made from bracken roots; and hanami -komochi, rice cakes you cook yourself and season, as you please, with a combination of five flavors, such as kinako soy bean flour, seaweed, or soy sauce.
