Evacuation advisories that can reach to all residents
It will soon be one year since a massive earthquake struck northeastern Japan.
Efforts are underway not only in municipalities hit directly by the quake but also in other regions as well as at companies to launch systems that can deliver evacuation advisories to residents without failure.
Before the disaster, many municipalities relied on loud speaker to issue such warnings.
But a government survey found that the messages reached to only 13 percent of residents in affected areas on March 11th.
Ofunato City in Iwate Prefecture, one of the worst-hit areas, is trying out various methods to ensure smooth deliveries of disaster warnings, including equipping individual households with portable tablet terminals and creating a network that connects all residents via their cell phones.
The aim is to create several communication layers to make sure all people receive critical information in times of emergency.
Also, some municipalities and beverage makers joined hands to make full use of something ubiquitous in this country, vending machines, which are said to number more than 2.5 million.
We'll look into projects launched to draw lessons from the March 11th disaster.
