Ichikawa Danjuro XII: Reaching out to the ends of the universe
Ichikawa Danjuro XII
Robert Campbell
Ichikawa Danjuro is the most prestigious name in Tokyo Kabuki theater. Twenty-seven years ago the name was passed on to its current holder, Ichikawa Danjuro XII. Eight years ago, he was diagnosed with leukemia. But after successfully fighting the disease he returned to work, and today he continues to be a top Kabuki performer. In 2007, he gave his first performance at the Opera National De Paris.
Ichikawa Danjuro XII lost his father, Ichikawa Danjuro XI, at a young age. For a time he was unsure if he wanted to carry on the Danjuro name. But as he reflected on the long line of actors that had assumed the name, Danjuro XII began to appreciate the differences between Western and Kabuki theater, and to cherish Kabuki's unique history and culture.
Speaking with Robert Campbell, Danjuro XII comments on his commitment to Kabuki: "Kabuki has always been a popular form of entertainment. It has evolved over the ages, adapting to the audience's tastes. It is my goal to preserve and nurture this unique art, part of Japanese cultural DNA, and share it with the world."
