Bento: Good things in small packages
Bento lunchboxes come in all shapes and sizes, from the purely functional to food made for fun or an aesthetic experience. The ingredients are varied but often include an array of items chosen for a balanced diet. The word is out, and people around the world are starting to take to bento too.
As part of a recent renovation, the Daimaru department store at Tokyo Station created one of the largest bento selections in the country: more than 1,000 types every day. Professionals, however, aren't the only masters of bento. A contest this week featured lunchboxes put together with home cooking and the love of family.
Generally speaking, it's wives and mothers who cook up homemade bento. Among those creators, bento with the features of recognizable characters are becoming a means of expression. One blogger of "chara-ben" offers classes on how to make them in 3D.
