J-Innovators:
Ultra-thin, Ultra-flexible Plasma Displays

This time we meet an innovator who has developed the world's thinnest plasma display. Japanese television manufacturers may be feeling the heat from South Korea and elsewhere, but this new display is truly astonishing! The display itself is only 0.9mm thick! But its thinness isn't the only amazing thing about it! Tune in to find how today's innovator went from working in the R&D department of a major electronics maker, to the developer of the world's thinnest plasma display. You'll also hear about how he bounced back from misfortune and kept pushing on.

Thyroid hormone injections can extend the imprinting period for chicks

Science News Watch:
Hormones and Animal Imprinting

Science Watcher Katsuyuki Sakai focuses on news about the influence of hormones on animal imprinting. It was generally accepted that the chicks of certain ducks will only imprint on their parents during the first three days after they are born. But a Teikyo University research team has now shown that the chicks' ability to imprint can be extended for an additional day with the injection of a certain hormone. Can you guess what it is? There are things that can only be learned in earliest infancy for humans too. Does this hormone have a similar effect on people? Find out on the next episode of Science View, airing November 9th.
Oil extracted from algae
Pancreatic cancer is extremely difficult to treat. A drug treatment is now being developed based on research about the metabolism of a roundworm.

The Leading Edge:
Metabolomics: How Life Works

Metabolism is a term that most people probably know, but do you know just exactly what metabolism is? It's the process by which living creatures chemically change and create substances. On a cellular level, life works like a chemical plant. Animals are capable of producing over 3,000 different substances while plants can produce nearly 200,000. Today, we focus on a few of the substances that play a key role in metabolism. First, an oil made by algae that could be used as a new bio-fuel. It was even used to fly a jet plane. Next, a substance that is used to produce a drug for treating pancreatic cancer. But that's not all! Tune in to learn more about the newest research on the amazing mechanisms of living things and how they can help create new kinds of energy and medicine.
