Kazumi Murose - a master of the Urushi lacquer craft
Kazumi Murose
Lacquer Craftsman / Age 61
Born 26.12.1950 in Tokyo
Studied under his father, Shunji Murose, Yoshikuni Taguchi and Gonroku Matsuda.
First accepted at the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition in 1975.
Engaged in conservation and restoration of a national treasure, the Ume-makie-bako toiletry case with plum blossom design, and production of a replica of the Kingin-densono-karatachi lacquered sword of the Shosoin Treasure House since 1980.
Designated a Living National Treasure in 2008.
Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts.
Murose became a designated Living National Treasure in the field of maki-e lacquerware at the young age of fifty-eight. Takeshi's own father was a lacquer craftsman, so his interest in the field dates a long way back. In the workshop, Takeshi observes the extraordinary skill and intricacy of Murose's art as he works with micron precision. The combination of traditional techniques and aesthetic novelty produces works that speak of the Japanese people's tremendous history of working in lacquer.
TAKESHI's VOICE
TAKESHI's VOICE
The amazing thing about craftsmanship is that it includes art within it. It's not the pursuit of art for art's sake. Art is contained within the craft itself. There are limits to each piece, yet in a sense you create something limitless. That's art. If you try to make something without any constraints, it actually inhibits creativity.

Thank you. One of my favourite series.
ReplyDeleteWow... I missed this one. Thank you! As I've said before, I get NHK World ota. But the picture quality is poor (std def); so I like watching these. Also FYI, I've tried all of the download methods and I like Zippyshare the best. There is only one pop-up; and once you get past that and enter the Captcha letters there is no waiting, you can do concurrent downloads, and the speed is very fast. Thanks again and happy new year!!!
