Imagine-nation this week features a 34-year-old female manga artist. She is young - born in 1978! - but Arina Tanemura has been in the business for 16 years since making her debut with the Style of the Second Love in the monthly girls' manga magazine, Ribon. That was in her final year of senior high in 1996. The girls loved it and she has been in constant demand in both weekly and monthly manga magazines since. Her best-known works include Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne and Full Moon Wo Sagashite, both also made into TV cartoon serials. She started a new work called FUDANJUKU MONOGATARI in Monthly Magazine Margaret in 2011 about teenage girl singers who dress up as boys, her 16th manga serial! Tanemura is revered by the girl fans of stories about romantic love between boys and other female "otaku" themes. Young but veteran, her works were long the pillar of Ribon. Tanemura made a fresh start in the spring of 2011 when her exclusive contract with Ribon expired. We visit Tanemura's stud io to explore the sources of the artistic imagination of this leading light in Japan's shojo manga world!

Popular manga artist Kenichi Kiriki's latest work is the lyrical hit Tokyo Shutter Girl featuring a high school girl street photographer. Kiriki is also a member of Project Tokiwaso Street, which upholds the traditions of the Minami-nagasaki area of Toshima in Tokyo where many of the founders of Japan's modern manga tradition once lived and worked. He organizes manga events and workshops at the Shiun-so, the former studio and home of manga legend Fujio Akatsuka.
