Takeshi Art Beat - 2012/05/17 - Mitsuo Ogawa, Traditional Temple Carpenter

May 17, Thu.
Mitsuo Ogawa - Expert Traditional Temple Carpenter

Takeshi visits leading Japanese temple carpenter Mitsuo Ogawa at work in Nara, where Ogawa is now engaged in renovation of the Yakushiji temple. They go together inside normally sealed off parts of the eastern pagoda to admire the aesthetic sense and craftsmanship of the artisans who made it 1,300 years ago. Back at Ogawa's workshop, Takeshi is thrilled to observe the carpentry skills used to create Japan's distinctive religious architecture. They are the same age and both have apprentices. They discuss the Japanese aesthetic sense and what it means to be a master.
