On this edition of journeys in japan we celebrate sakura or cherry blossoms, which are a symbol of spring in Japan. The delicate pink petals have been worshipped here since ancient times.
Our reporter Lana Bergmann, from Germany, is a huge fan of sakura. Since cherry trees in areas along the Seto Inland Sea bloom earlier than in many other parts of Japan due to the mild climate, she heads there in pursuit of famous cherry blossom sites. She wants to explore the Japanese passion for the pink petals.
Onomichi
The port town on the Seto Inland Sea is also called a "town of slopes" for its alleys traversing the hills.
There are 25 temples in its old quarter, many of which have cherry-tree-studded grounds, which are popular during the sakura season.
To reach Onomichi from Hiroshima, it takes about an hour and a half by local train.
Fukuyama Castle
Fukuyama is 20 minutes by train from Onomichi.
Fukuyama castle, located near the station, is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot.
With some 500 cherry trees around the castle, visitors enjoy taking photographs of the blossoms against the castle backdrop.

Miyajima
The island close to Hiroshima is "home to the gods" that reside at Itsukushima shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Tourists love visiting the ancient island when its 2,000 cherry trees are in bloom.
To reach Miyajima from Hiroshima, it takes about 40 minutes by local train and ferry.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park
The Peace Memorial Park is located in the center of Hiroshima city.
The Atomic Bomb Dome is a city symbol.
Cherry blossoms gave hope to the people of Hiroshima after the attack when they blossomed in the burnt out city. The cherry trees that survived the bombing 67 years ago still bloom in spring.
To reach the Peace Memorial Park, take a tram or bus.

Iwagijima
The Seto Inland Sea is dotted with about 700 large and small islands.
Lana will visit Iwagijima, which has a population of about 2000 people. But it actually has as many as 3000 cherry trees.
It's an island of cherry blossoms.
All the trees were planted by residents and represent one of their wishes.
To reach Iwagijima from Hiroshima, it takes about two and a half hours.
You can take local train to Onomichi and transfer to a local bus, followed by a ferry.

To reach Hiroshima from Tokyo, board a bullet train (nearly four hours) or fly from Haneda (just over one hour) and transfer to a bus to the city center (one hour).
