[Focus]
1. The J. League's 20th Year - Secrets of the Big Clubs' Strength
Here is the second part of our feature on the Japan Professional Football League - the J. League - now in its 20th season. Kashima Antlers have won the league seven times. Urawa Reds enjoy tremendous local support. How did these huge clubs nurture such playing strength and close ties with their supporters? The league now has 40 clubs in two divisions. We analyze the power and passion at two of the biggest.
*Eight clubs have won the 40-team J. League so far. Antlers have modeled themselves on Brazil. Eight out of 10 managers during the past two decades have been from Brazil. Brazilian players such as Zico, at the very beginning, Leonardo and Jorginho have taught a high level of professionalism, particularly the outstanding individual skills and the thirst for victory. Reds briefly even dropped into Division Two but they roared back with their tremendous supporters to win the league championship. They are the league leader in spectator numbers.
2. King Kazu - Still Playing at 45!
Kazuyoshi Miura plays for Yokohama FC in Division Two. Many call him King Kazu. He crossed to Brazil at the age of 15 to develop his skills and carried on as a Japanese football pioneer. The first Japanese to play for a top professional team in Italy's Serie A, he also did much to help Japan qualify for its first World Cup and has had a continuing influence on Japanese players of all ages. He is no longer being called up for Japan but has never stopped passing on his experience to the youngsters at a series of J. League clubs. What lies behind his passion?
