Aoyama
Aoyama. Tokyo's most fashion-conscious area is packed with luxury brands. Great food and shopping? That goes without saying. But Aoyama has so much more, including cutting-edge art and refined Japanese traditions. Join us as we explore outstanding Aoyama.
Aoyama (2 min. 43 sec.)
Aoyama is up the road from Shibuya. Not far to the north is Shinjuku, and not far to the east, Roppongi... all major Tokyo destinations.
Three subway stations offer access: Omotesando, Gaienmae and Aoyama Itchome.
National Route 246, known here as Aoyama-dori, runs through the center of town.
Nezu Museum (3 min. 53 sec.)
This is the Nezu Museum. A Japanese railway magnate collected Japanese and Western art and built a museum to display them. It opened in 1941. Some of its buildings burned in the war, but the collection survived and continues to welcome visitors 70 years on.
The collection has more than seventy four hundred items - paintings, sculptures, ceramics and more, including a number of national treasures and important cultural properties.
Open-air market (5 min. 12 sec.)
Chris has come to an open-air market in Aoyama. It's a new destination that opened just this summer.
Around 20 vendors operating out of trailers and stalls sell everything from fresh produce to health drinks...and it's packed with surprises. There are eateries serving delicious food too.
Art gallery and Gold leaf products (6 min. 23 sec.)
Aoyama is the place for the latest fashions... Just walking down its glitzy main avenue, you can imagine you're living the high life.
But duck down a side street, and you can also find fun and informality. Here's one example... At the back of the store is an art gallery. In front is a shop selling toys and picture books.
Ikebana school (4 min. 08 sec.)
It's an ikebana school. Classes are offered for all levels, from beginners to those seeking certification. There are even classes in English twice a week. Orientation lessons are held from time to time. Reservations can be made by phone or via the internet.
Japanese ikebana has many schools. This one, adapting to changing lifestyles, offers ikebana for modern spaces, not just traditional Japanese rooms.

As always - many, many thanks for uploading! Happy memories from my last visit to Tokyo in July...
ReplyDeleteThanks again for the uploads.
ReplyDeleteVery lucky ninjagame, I too would like to visit some day. How easy would it be to survive over there with out eating fish/seafood? .. Don't like, but love the culture, architecture, and spirituality of japan.
Are there any other shows like the one's shown on NHK, on other japanese networks? (with subs/dubs of course) I love travel shows, but I've seem to have watched all the american ones, focused on Asia/Japan of course.
Thanks again
Many thanks for the uploading! Really appreciated it!

Librarian, are you still there? Are you OK? I'm worried...
ReplyDeleteyes looks like this site is frozen for a while... can anyone find alternative cloud hosting for Japan shows?? anyone help librarian?
ReplyDeleteDunno about a cloud, but there's a Bulgarian site where you can get "BEGIN Japanology", "Seasoning the Seasons", "Journeys in Japan", "Mapping Kyoto Streets", "Tokyo Eye", "Itadakimasu!" and "imagine nation".
ReplyDeleteJust search for "Seasoning the Seasons Journey of 12 Castles Exploring Japan's Castle Culture (704x396 x264)", for instance, and you'll find the website.
Yes, I know this site. But the video there is very LQ and always cut to 4:3 ratio.
DeleteWhat has me worried, though, is not that the mediafire account is "suspended", as the message says, but that the Librarian seems to be off the radar, too. At least hellofuntime.com seems to be working fine - apart from the fact that I still can't post comments from Safari.
There is also a youtube channel or two which have the latest NHK shows uploaded...
ReplyDeleteoh I really do hope that You are ok, dear Librarian! I keep my fingers crossed waiting for You to be back! Please..be back.. or at least give us a shout that You are still alive!
