NIPPON STYLE: Jewelry that Touches the Heart
Jewelry designer Motonori Masui scored an instant hit in backstreet Harajuku with his funny but stylish accessories in the late 1990's. The brand - Jam Home Made - uses its own materials and methods to secure the quality of these playful mementoes which are meant to be "close to the skin" - that is, you'll never want to take them off. The line-up includes wallets, necklaces and rings. One of the best-known is a black silver ring that makes a virtue of tarnishing and has, in the process, overturned many assumptions about noble metals. There is also the white gold and diamond engagement ring that is painted black all over at first only for the paint to wear off over the years and to finish in its pristine white glory! Masui's focus is on bridal jewelry these days. We see the endeavor as he now strives to make "a product that will not be consumed."
