Bento - Packed Meals
Autumn is a great season for traveling in Japan and there's nothing better than enjoying the scenery with a nicely made packed lunch. The Japanese packed lunch - called the bento - with its rich array of choice, colorful delicacies is itself a distillation of the Japanese sense of beauty. Japanese women love cute bento boxes with vivid colors. Thomas Bertrand, originally from France, now runs a bento box store in Japan. He says he found the sheer variety of packed meals here much wider than in France. He tells us what he likes about them.
Bertrand says, "the Japanese insist on packing in many different items prettily to really enjoy their meal. The sight wets the appetite. Looks matter. I think that's the charm of bento culture."
