Video of damaged reactor container shows difficulty of decommissioning
Video taken with an endoscope of the No. 2 rector at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant shows that the level of cooling water in the containment vessel is only 60 centimeters, compared to the original estimate of about 3 meters. The far-lower-than-expected level causes concern about melted nuclear fuel. Damaged parts also proved difficult to locate. Moreover, extremely high radiation of about 73 sieverts per hour was detected in the reactor. All this underscores the difficulties that Tokyo Electric Power Co. will face in any attempt to decommission the damaged reactors.
Other news:
- TEPCO turns off No.6 reactor at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant for regular inspections, leaving only one nuclear reactor operating in Japan. Energy conservation efforts almost certainly will be required again this summer.
- Self-Defense Force prepares for deployment of surface-to-air interceptor missiles, following Defense Minister's order in anticipation of North Korea's planned satellite launch.
