Cherry blossoms spread cheer across Japan after a trying year
The blossoming of cherry trees is the essence of Spring in Japan. They bring friends and colleagues together for parties under pink canopies and inspire individual reflection on the natural beauty that inevitably comes with the change of seasons.
Last year, however, even the cherry blossoms could not lift the mood of the country just weeks after the earthquake and tsunami. That melancholy has given way to a more lighthearted mood in many places, as people feel ready to enjoy the occasion.
Major viewing spots have been attracting large crowds and goods featuring cherry blossom designs have been selling well. The program will explore the roots of the Japanese affection for sakura and show the scenery in various parts of the country.
