This edition of journeys in japan takes us to Shiga Prefecture, near Kyoto, where we explore the eastern shores of Lake Biwa.

Koga Ninja House
Two kilometers from JR Kusatsu Line's Konan Station. (If traveling by taxi, get off a stop earlier at Kibukawa Station since taxi service is unavailable at Konan Station.)
Hours: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (last admission at 4:30 pm)
Open year round (except for December 27 to January 1)
Closed December 27 to January 1
Admission: Adult 600 yen / Child 300 yen

Hikone Castle
A 10-minute walk from JR Tokaido Honsen Hikone Station.
Hours: 8:30 am to 5:00 pm
Admission: [Castle and Genkyuen Garden] Adult 600 yen / Child 200 yen
English guided tours for the castle also available at an additional fee.

Okishima
Twenty minutes by taxi from JR Tokaido Honsen Notogawa Station to Horikiri-New port for ferry rides to the island. Ferry service: 11 services a day on weekdays and 9 on holidays. The ride takes 20 minutes and the fee is 500 yen. There are two places to stay on the island, but no restaurants.

Gokasho
Fifteen minutes by taxi from JR Tokaido Honsen Notogawa Station.
Famous for its old townscape of merchant houses. Some of the houses are open to the public.
Admission to homes: Adult 900 yen / Child 410 yen
Closed Mondays (except for national holidays), the day after a national holiday, year-end and New Year holidays
Hours: 9:30 am to 4:30 pm (closed Mondays)
