Higashioji-dori

Bustling with tourists year round, Higashioji-dori is an eight-kilometer street running north-south in Kyoto's east with a university; historical shrines and temples; and a famous park for cherry blossoms - Japan's unofficial national flower.
The new and ancient temples along this street have magnificent art, stunning Japanese gardens, dazzling lacquer art, and many other impressive features. While enrolled in the Department of British and American Studies at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, he took leave to work at the Japanese Embassy in Kenya. On graduating, Sato taught English before becoming a radio personality for the Alpha Morning Kyoto show at FM Kyoto (Alfa Station).

Hyakumanben Chionji
The largest prayer beads in Japan, made with 1080 large wooden beads, hang in the Main Hall of Hyakumanben Chionji temple. On the 15th of each month, a handicraft flea market is held on the temple grounds with 450 stalls selling a variety of handmade goods.

Kyoto University
Located south of Chionji, Kyoto University was the second university founded in Japan and is one of Japan's prestigious universities producing Nobel laureates. In the spirit of the university's fundamental principle - academic freedom - students attend their graduation ceremony in extraordinary costumes. On the university grounds is a lovely, reasonably priced French restaurant open to the public.

Shogoin Yatsuhashi
Founded in 1689, this shop specializes in Kyoto's famous sweets, yatsuhashi and nama-yatsuhashi. These sweets are made from cinnamon and have a distinct, slightly biting flavor and aroma. Try the seasonal specialties, such as the cherry blossom nama-yatsuhashi popular in spring.

Jukkoku-bune
Narrow boats, called jukkoku-bune, run during the spring tourist season on the Lake Biwa Canal, at the intersection of Higashioji-dori and Reisen-dori. The return three-kilometer trip takes around 25 minutes. The pleasure boat ride offers a somewhat different, glorious view of the cherry blossoms as seen from water level.

Chion-in
The upper section of Chion-in's imposing main gate, Sanmon - a national treasure, is a Buddhist temple that is only open to the public in spring and autumn. This spring, Sanmon is open between April 27 and May 31, 2012. Enshrined here is the Crowned Shakamuni Buddha and 16 rakan statues. Take a sneak preview of Sanmon's magnificent interior.

Maruyama Park
Kyotoites and foreign visitors alike visit Maruyama Park, which stretches behind Yasaka-jinja shrine, throughout the year, but they throng here during cherry blossom season. Of the about 700 cherry trees, the showpiece is the huge weeping cherry.

Kodaiji & Kodaiji Sho Museum
The wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who unified the political factions of Japan in 16th century, founded Kodaiji temple in his memory. Their statues are enshrined in the sanctuary. Kodaiji is famous for its makie, fine art created with lacquer and gold dust. The miniature shrine in the sanctuary is breathtaking. The superb lacquerware Toyotomi and his wife, Nene, used in their daily lives are exhibited in the art museum below the temple.

Yasui Konpiragu
People flock to Yasui Konpiragu, everyday. The secret is its power to make and break ties. Worshipers pray for romantic luck at many shrines, but few pray to break off ties. Here, they pray to break not only romantic ties but also ties to alcohol and even smoking. Worshippers line up to crawl through the miraculous megalith within the shrine.

Chishaku-in
The old temple exhibits in its treasure house many wall paintings, which are national treasures, painted by Hasegawa Tohaku and his pupils. Using gold leaf, Hasegawa's Maple and other dynamic works are representative of medieval culture in the late 16th century.

Tofuku-ji Temple
Famous for viewing the autumn colors from Tsutenkyo bridge, the Tofukuji temple gardens are beautiful throughout the year. In Hojo Garden - a tranquil Zen garden - the flowing sand designs, the moss-covered artificial hill and the perfectly positioned boulders represent the world in which an immortal hermit lives.
