King of tap Savion Glover - with his polyphonic sound

Savion Glover, Tap Dancer
Born in 1973

Debuted on Broadway at the age of 12. Won 3 Tony Awards, including Best Choreography, for Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk (1996) at the age of 23. With work that includes fusion with jazz and classics, he is a pioneer of new fields in rhythm and tap.

Takeshi's fascination with tap dancing goes back a long way, as witnessed by the tranquil tap dancing scene in the film, TAKESHIS', and the exuberant mass tap dance in Zatoichi. He studied tap himself as an aspiring young entertainer and today thinks of Savion as the god of tap.

Takeshi's destination this time is Savion's coveted new studio about an hour's drive west from Manhattan. Takeshi comes equipped with a high-speed camera to discover the secrets of Savion's rich and varied tap sounds. Slowed to one tenth of real speed, we see how Savion points his feet in widely different directions to strike the floor in many places. You can't see where the sounds are coming from with the naked eye as Savion performs his routines at super high speed. For Savion, tap is music. He gazes deeply within himself to draw the sounds and rhythms from body and mind. This is what he wants to do with his life.

TAKESHI's VOICE

He said that tap is not just rhythm, but music itself. And he certainly convinced me. In his book, he explains the many ways he uses the metal taps on the heels and toes of the shoes to create different sounds. His feet really are a musical instrument. It's not just percussion, it's music. Now I completely understand why.

I can't re-post files, sorry. The exception is files that are less than a day old. All mediafire links are broken forever. If you ask nicely and show that you tried but couldn't find the file elsewhere, someone may share it again.
