NIPPON STYLE: Traditional fine lace lives on in Japan
Leavers lace has long been regarded as the finest lace of all. Hyogo-based Sakae Lace started leavers lace production half a century ago in 1958 and now enjoys the number one share in the business. The leavers lace machines have low output and their use has been declining even in Europe, the home of the industry, but Sakae Lace has continued using eighty year old machines that it maintains with home-made parts. Leavers lace was born in 19th century Europe in the Industrial Revolution and the tradition now lives on in Japan. We talk with designer Motonari Ono, who loves this lace, and introduce the manufacturing techniques in a close up report made at Sakae Lace.
