Small Firms Show They're the Tops
A small Japanese company with only a few workers proved it was up to a space-age task. The factory created a critical component of the Hayabusa space probe. In 2010, Hayabusa succeeded in bringing dust samples of an asteroid to earth. Now, workers at the same plant.
They are engaged in a project aimed at earning a different sort of glory. They're making "fighting spinning tops." The two-centimeter tops are used in competitions in which they spin on a table until one drives the other out.
Sixty-four small manufacturers competed in the Kanto preliminary round of the national tournament. The event is more than fun and games. It's an opportunity for the factories to display their signature techniques.
Small manufacturers face a wide range of challenges. But when put to the test, many of them are capable of performing at the highest level.
