Akio Hirata - who designs and makes one-of-a-kind hats
Akio Hirata
Born in Nagano in 1925.
He crossed to France in 1962, where he studied traditional haute-mode hat-making techniques under Jean Barthet. Returning to Japan in 1965, he launched his Boutique Salon Coco in Azabu, Tokyo in 1971.
A global fashion pioneer in hat design, Akio Hirata remains very much a focus of respect and attention today. His clients range from high-end fashion brands to even the Imperial household. Some of the traditional European hat-making techniques that he acquired in France in the 1960's are now said only to survive in his hands. Takeshi visits Hirata's studio in the Azabu district of Tokyo. Hirata commands not only the finest skills but also great spontaneity and freedom of expression. Takeshi discovers the energy that fires Hirata's continuing creativity even now that he is getting on in years.
