NIPPON STYLE: Gorgeous bags made with apparel techniques
Designer Naoto Satoh says he loves to surprise people and his bags are certainly different. He applies dressmaking techniques in fascinating new 3D forms. There is, for example, the skirt-shaped bag with pleats, the fruit of 10 years of trial and error, which won the grand prize at the 2010 Japan Leather Award. Satoh used cow skin for its strength and pliability, and applied the skirt-pleating skills to integrate their ornamental and functional aspects. There is also his Neoplain series of bags made from synthetic rubber in smoothly rounded shapes for use with wetsuits. Satoh now even supplies bags to Junko Koshino and Issey Miyake. Our close-up report features this one-of-a-kind bag designer and his design philosophy.
