Nebuta of Aomori
The Aomori Nebuta festival is a highlight of the Tohoku summer. The giant Nebuta floats decorated with fierce, demonic warriors take center stage in this awesome event. The festival goes back more than 300 years and started out as a gentle ceremony of releasing floating lanterns on the river and sea to ward off evil spirits. Many pioneers from the Kanto and Kansai regions settled in the frontier province of Aomori during the Edo period and the festivities grew in scale as they brought with them the culture of the woodblock prints, Gion festival etc. We focus on the beauty of the Nebuta.
Huge Nebuta floats adorn the Tohoku summer nights. The Nebuta dominates Aomori Prefecture from late July into early August each year. The festival is called Tachi Neputa in Goshogawara and Neputa in Hirosaki... the diverse traditions are maintained with passion across the prefecture. The Nebuta festival of Aomori City is particularly grand with its enormous Nebuta floats and a fantastic crowd of dancers.
Twenty-two floats take part in the Aomori Nebuta festival. All are made anew each year. We were greeted by the sight of the wooden frame and a complex mesh of wires when we visited the place where they are made. Paper will be plastered on the wires to produce the amazing forms. It's the skill with wires which underpins the beauty of Nebuta.
The blueprint for the Nebuta float is just the single picture. The Nebuta artisans reproduce it in 3D through their skill with wire.
