Old houses of Tohoku
The Tohoku region is a treasure trove of old houses. There are gorgeous roofs shaped like samurai helmets, faces of gods on rustic pillars... all highly individual and deeply rooted in Tohoku customs and history. Distinctive carpentry traditions have also been handed down in the Kesen area of southern Iwate Prefecture. We introduce Kesen carpenters who are now working for recovery.
Many wonderful old houses dot the broad Tohoku region, where we find examples of local wisdom for weathering the harsh winters and needs of the times. The big earthen floors not only provided invaluable workspace in winter but were also a place for the gods to come and stay.
Sanriku, a coastline blessed with rich seafood, also gave rise to the skilled Kesen carpenters who built palatial homes. Kenji Hirayama, an authority on Kesen carpenters, says, "The Kesen carpenters never make the same thing twice. They see good things and try to do them better. They have been known for their enterprising spirits." The region suffered heavy damage in the tsunami of March, 2011 but the carpenters are working for recovery.
