On this edition of journeys in japan, our reporter Michael visits two rivers in the south of Ehime Prefecture - the Hiromi River and the Hiji River - and discovers the colorful culture and traditional customs in these areas.

Osakana-kan
This aquarium specializes in freshwater fish, exhibiting around 120 species from many countries. One local fish is the akame (Japanese lates), which is an endangered species.

Open: 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Closed: Wednesday.
Open on national holidays; also in spring (Golden Week), summer (Obon) and New Year holidays (except Jan.1)

Suehiro Restaurant
This restaurant specializes in dishes featuring wild eel and other fish caught frsh from the Hiromi River.

Open: 11:30 am - 2:00 pm; 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm (reservations required for evenings); open daily year-round.

Canyoning

Garyu Sanso
A traditional villa overlooking Garyunofuchi, giving with the best views of the Hiji River. This is a wonderful example of Japanese architecture with exquisite design dertails, such as the ranma wood panels of the four seasons.
Tea ceremonies are held in the teahouse on Sundays and national holidays.

Open year-round: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm (no admittance after 4:30 pm)
Admission: 500 yen (200 yen for children ages 15 or under)

Ukai Cormorant Fishing
Ozu is one of the three most famous places in Japan for ukai cormorant fishing. This is one of the highlights of summer in Ozu, attracting more than 10,000 visitors each year. Cruise downstream for 2.7 km. on a yakata-bune leisure boat, to watch the cormorants catching ayu fish.

Period: June 1 - September 20
Times: Chartered boats: 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Scheduled cruises: 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Cost: Chartered boats: 36,750 yen (18 people), 26,250 yen (10 people)
Scheduled cruises: 3,500 yen (2,000 yen for children 12 or under)
