Fuji through the four seasons, the sacred, ethereal scenery and the words of people whose lives have revolved around the mountain over the years. Discover the allure of the mountain that has gripped the minds of Japanese people for thousands of years.
Mt. Fuji
At 3776m, this is Japan's tallest mountain. The volcano straddles the border of Yamanashi and Shizuoka Prefectures and its crater is about 800 meters across. It has been quiet since its last eruption in 1707. There is a shrine at the summit and it has long been worshiped as a sacred mountain. The fifth of ten stages up the mountain can be reached by car.
Fuji Yoshida Fire Festival
The fire festival of Fuji Yoshida City in Yamanashi Prefecture has a history of over 400 years. It is held in late August each year at the end of the climbing season. A portable shrine in the shape of the mountain is dropped on the ground three times as a prayer for the volcano not to erupt again.
The Funatsutainaijukei Caves
These ethereal caves are located in the town of Kawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture. The round lava caves were formed in the shape of giant trees which were engulfed and burned by the lava flow. They extend as far as 68 meters.
What are the Fuji Mounds?
Little versions of Mount Fuji were built around Japan for people who could not go to the mountain in person to climb. It is said that they were made with lava carried from Mount Fuji.
