Hiroshi Sugimoto: A dream uniting classical and modern
Guest: Hiroshi Sugimoto
Presenter: Robert Campbell
After finishing university, Hiroshi Sugimoto travelled to the United States. A talented photographer, he honed his unique style by taking pictures of dioramas at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Later, he photographed ocean vistas around the world. Sugimoto is also a professional classical art dealer, and through this other career he has become well versed in Japanese art and architecture - he has even been involved in the design of Shinto shrines. Last year, Sugimoto found himself in the spotlight when he staged a production of Bunraku, a kind of traditional Japanese puppet theater. He hopes to take his Bunraku show to Europe next year.
Well into his 60s, Sugimoto continues to expand his interests and his body of work. "Art is what expands our values, opens new doors. We have reached the limit of material civilization - my goal is to show people the many facets of classical Japanese thinking on nature and the universe." Robert Campbell speaks with Hiroshi Sugimoto about the philosophy behind his work, his goals for the future, and how going abroad helped him rediscover Japan.
