Actual affluence is measured in more than money. One example can be found in the Seto inland sea, where islands of many faces rest in the peaceful waters, as small boats thread between them. At first glance, this scenery seems to belong to another time. That is all the more reason why people of the modern world, tired and exhausted of information overload and competition, find inspiration in them.
The Setouchi islands have not been immune to modernization, or for that matter to depopulation and the challenge of meeting the needs of large numbers of older residents. But for 100 days every three years, they serve as the idyllic site for the Setouchi International Art Festival.
In anticipation of next year's festival, jibtv will rebroadcast programs featuring the 2010 event.
The first installment highlights the appeal of the islands and the lives of local people.
