Mount Bandai, symbol of Aizu
Kozuyu, local cuisine
Naginata practice
This episode takes us to Aizu in western Fukushima Prefecture. The beautiful area around Mount Bandai - known locally as treasure mountain - is a prominent resort area. Aizu also flourished in the samurai age as one of the biggest economic and political hubs in eastern Japan. The samurai spirit is evident in various traditions passed down from the days of old.
The program explores Aizu's breathtaking scenery and its samurai spirit, which is still alive in the hearts of the people.
Mount Bandai
The area around Mount Bandai has been designated as a national park. Mount Bandai erupted in 1888, creating many lakes. Some have beautiful colors due to light reflected off their mineral makeup. The shortest route to the top of Mount Bandai takes about two hours.
Salt
The salt made by boiling down hot spring water is rich in minerals and popular for its unique sweetness. It is sold in inns and gift shops around Mount Bandai.
Geta
Geta are traditional Japanese sandals made of wood. Takashi Kurosawa is one of the few craftsmen involved in the entire paulownia geta production process, from cutting down the tree to finishing the final product.
Kozuyu
Kozuyu is served to guests on weddings, funerals, and other occasions. Now restaurants and hot spring inns in Aizu Wakamatsu City often prepare this local dish for guests.
