Nobuyuki Tsujii - Creating Sounds of Purity and Innocence
Nobuyuki Tsujii
Musician born in Tokyo in 1988
Blind from birth, he won the Critics' Award as the youngest participant at the 15th International Frederik Chopin Piano Competition in 2005. In 2009, he became the first Japanese to win gold at the 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.
His music extolled for its purity and innocence, Nobuyuki Tsujii performs all over the world. Takeshi visits Tsujii at a concert hall where Tujii is recording his own compositions and delves into the sources of his creativity. Tsujii is completely blind but experiences the world with his whole body through an "inner eye". The things he realizes at such moments gush up as melodies to become the fine and sensitive music he creates. The two discover empathy through music. Tsujii gives Takeshi some music drawn from his impressions of Takeshi and Takeshi reciprocates by drawing Tsujii playing.
TAKESHI's VOICE
TAKESHI's VOICE
With Nobuyuki, even though his sight is impaired, it doesn't seem to handicap him. Actually, he seems to see more light, to see more of the changing seasons, than the rest of us. I think his music is fascinating; it sounds like a film score! Thinking about it cinematically, I'm seeing a scene of daily life in an Italian or Spanish village. There's an old man and kids running around. A view of the sea. People are dipping bread in olive oil and eating it. That piece felt like Europe to me.
