J-Innovators:
A Remarkable 3D Fabric...That's Flat!

Weaving is usually done by interlacing two sets of yarn, the warp and weft, at right angles. In this edition of J-Innovators we meet a Takumi, or innovator, who has come up with a loom that can vary the spacing between the threads to create wavy patterns in the fabric. The resulting fabric appears three-dimensional, but it's actually flat! This remarkable wavy weave already has a growing legion of fans. Join us as reporter Michelle Yamamoto meets with Masatoshi Takeda, an innovator who produces new weaves by modifying traditional looms he has collected from around Japan.

Science News Watch:
A Mobile Radiation Treatment Facility

Science Watcher Koichi Kitazawa takes a look at a state-of-the-art mobile treatment facility for use during nuclear accidents. The vehicle was developed by the National Institute of Radiological Sciences after an existing mobile treatment unit proved ineffective during the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in March, 2011. This new model can now monitor outside radiation levels and better handle breaks in communication. Tune in to found out more about the equipment packed into this new mobile treatment facility.

The Leading Edge:
Deep Sea Gold Rush!

Japan might soon experience its own gold rush! Scientists are hoping to tap the vast deposits of gold, silver, copper, and other rare metals found in oceanic plate boundaries. State-of-the-art Japanese technology is being employed to locate and extract metals from these deposits, which are produced by the dynamic forces at work inside our planet. Japan was once referred to as "Zipangu" by Marco Polo, a land fabled for its gold. With all of the new gold deposits being discovered in Japanese waters, Zipangu might not be a myth after all.
