The shrine was established, one thousand years ago, to quell the plague that ravaged Heian-kyo. It is said that worshippers will have good luck if they make a wish and rub the rock, called Ahokashi-san. In April, the shrine holds Yasurai Matsuri, which is one of Kyoto's three major more interesting festivals. Believers stand under the large Hanagasa umbrella during the festival for good health in the coming year.
