Shirakawa-dori

Map

Shirakawa-dori is a main thoroughfare in the very east of Kyoto city. Running north-south for five kilometers, it has been instrumental in nurturing the arts and culture since long before it was surfaced, half a century ago. Kyotoites create innovative culture through new collaborations, while continuing to follow in the footsteps of tradition. Along this street, we will see just how adept they have been at recreating themselves throughout history. Shirakawa-dori is an ideal place to view the beautiful fall foliage in the mountains of Kyoto.

Manshuin Monzeki
The temple has a karesansui-style garden built in the 17th century. The large pine represents a crane, and the sparkling white sand, a river. The view from Shoshoin leaves the impression that you are on a ship traversing a grand river.

Konkai Komyo-ji
This temple was established when the founder of the Jodo (Pure Land) Buddhist sect, Honen, built a residence on this location. The rocks in Shuin-no-niwa, a karesansui-style garden built in 2006, represent people and scenes from Honen's life.

Honode
Kirarazuke, eggplant pickled in miso paste, was served to monks as a snack as they climbed the grueling, steep slopes of the sacred mountain, Mt. Hiei. This pickling method, which has been handed down through the generations, is a guarded secret.

Back
Tanukidanisan Fudo-in
The Main Hall, which stands halfway up the mountain, brings to mind a theatrical stage. This was the training ground for mountain ascetics in Shinto, Japan's ancient religion. In summer, the shrine holds the Hiwatari Festival when believers walk on hot coals to exorcize evil.

Ichijoji Nakatani
Ichijoji Nakatani - in the town of Ichijoji - is famous for its decchi yokan, a sweet-bean jelly. The third generation owner's wife is a former patissier. She is like a fresh breeze of Western confectionary blowing through this traditional confectioner. Kinugoshi Matcha Tiramisu, a blend of Japanese and Western sweets, was the first confection created together by the husband and wife team.

Kyoto University of Art and Design
The Kyoto University of Art and Design, which is nestled in the mountain, nurtures young talent through the arts. Students present their works at the campus gallery, which is open to the public.

Hono-o
Glass pens, which were developed in Meiji-period Japan, are popular for their fluid writing and lasting ink. Glass pen craftsman, Seifu Kan, produces the pens with the difficult-to-work hard glass.

Back

Gake Shobo
The outer wall of this building facing Shirakawa-dori has an unusual objet d'art - a car rammed into the wall. Gake-shobo is a bookshop with prominent art and music sections, but it particularly specializes in subculture books. It also holds various events for artists to express themselves.

Masutani
Masutani is representative of Kyoto ramen, which looks heavier than it tastes. A distinct characteristic of their ramen, called Chatcha Ramen, is the pork back fat dispersed on the soup's surface.

Shinpukusaikan
This popular restaurant, which opens at 7 a.m., could be called the pioneer of Kyoto ramen. Their thin ramen noodles are tangled in a black, soy-flavored soup. You are sure to become addicted to this surprisingly light-flavored ramen.

Guest House Kyo-no-en
This converted old residence is a guesthouse where you can experience living, Japanese-style. Guests can relax in the common areas and exchange travel tips with their fellow guests. The private and dormitory rooms are reasonably priced.

Back

Seityuan
Enjoy French cuisine in a relaxed Kyoto machiya-style townhouse. Before you dine, you are served matcha green tea in a separate room to help you relax. The owner, who values the spirit of tea ceremony, welcomes diners with his sincere hospitality.

Back

Eikando Zenrin-ji
This temple is affectionately called Momiji-no Eikando, The Temple of Maple Leaves. In fall, about 30,000 maple trees turn colors, painting the temple grounds with a wash of color. The main image is called Migaeri Amida Nyorai - a compassionate figure not to be missed.

Nanzen-ji
This temple is one of the most prestigious Zen temples in Japan. Its stately gate, Sanmon - one of the three largest temple gates in Japan - is famous as an ideal location to view the colors. The vista from the gate's upper floor is spectacular.
