There's been a trend for trekking among young women in recent years. Many of them enjoy looking fashionable when they hit the trails. The so-called Yama-girls, or mountain girls, started emerging when outdoor brand Mont-bell created the popular Yama-skirt. Mont-bell is also behind the kitting out of such prominent alpinists and explorers as Yuichiro Miura, Junko Tabei and Yoshiharu Sekino, as well as astronaut Naoko Yamazaki. The company, with annual sales of about 37.5 billion yen, has 78 stores across Japan and overseas outlets in the United States, Switzerland, Nepal, China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore. Mont-bell founder Isamu Tatsuno is himself a serious climber - he is only the second Japanese to conquer the north face of the Eiger. He even hires outdoor specialists to help develop product lines. Mont-bell produces fashion in a world where function and safety always come first. Layering is key - it's important to maintain the heat- and moisture-retention propert ies of jackets, vests and trousers while also making them light. Many merchandise items easily crossover to house wear - the latest being insulated indoor footwear. We report closely on the man behind the brand, his staff and the brand philosophy.
